In the spirit of posting something just for fun on Fridays, I want to confess to a few of my guilty pleasures. I don’t normally tell the general public about these vices of mine, but if I really believe that authenticity is the path to happiness, then I guess I shouldn’t be hiding my favorite leisure activities should I?
So without further ado, a Friday Five list of my guilty pleasures: Continue reading Guilty Pleasure Friday
Two things I love are beer and Boston. If I can combine the two, so much the better.
There’s been a boom of breweries in the Boston metro area in the last several years, with tons of new smaller shops adding excellent options to local taps. A few of my favorites are Slumbrew, Jack’s Abby, and Trillium Brewing. These new entrants to the beer market offer interesting twists on classic beer styles, like Jack’s Abby’s variations on the lager.
As awesome as these new breweries are, I’m not here to talk about them. I want to sing the praises of one of Boston’s more senior breweries: Harpoon. Here’s why: Continue reading Drink Local Beer: Harpoon Brewery in Boston, MA
Hi, I’m Amy and I have a problem. I love to shop online and I especially love getting a great deal. I attribute it to evolutionary psychology: Instead of going out into the savanna to kill my dinner, I go online to hunt bargain buys.
If you’re like me and love to shop online, then you want ways to get the best possible price. Here are some of my best tips. Continue reading The Online Hunter-Gatherer: Find Big Shopping Savings with These Tips
I’m pretty open about my dislike of winter. Snow can be beautiful, but after a while, it can also be brutal. I miss feeling warm, seeing vibrant colors outdoors (an exception to the brilliant bluebird who tours my neighborhood a couple times a week–hi, friend!), and smelling flowers, grass, and rain on my walks. Continue reading February Pick-Me-Up: Smell a Lovely Smell
I may have mentioned a recent work trip to Portland, OR. Well, even on the road, a girl’s gotta eat, and part of the joy I take in work travel is finding local gems to try. With that in mind, my colleague and I hit up Deschutes Brewery in the Pearl District for dinner.
I was exceptionally pleased with both the beer and food at Deschutes. The food was interesting, upscale pub food. Continue reading Brewery Recommendation: Deschutes, Portland OR
They may be old-fashioned, but I really love making and eating casseroles, especially in the cooler weather. They’re filling comfort food that are often easy to make and reheat well for work lunches. Casseroles are also often relatively inexpensive, and portable for bringing to parties or potlucks.
A favorite casserole in our family is the Food & Wine Magazine Macaroni and Beef Casserole, which we affectionately call “chili mac” because that’s what it tastes like. If you enjoy the flavors of chili, you will probably like this casserole. Continue reading Recipe: Chili Mac (a.k.a Macaroni-and-Beef Casserole)
HowHave you heard the Taylor Swift song “Blank Space”?
If you’re like me, you may have noticed Taylor’s shout-out to Starbucks. The song goes:
All the lonely Starbucks lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game
Except . . . it doesn’t. Continue reading Taylor Swift Has Primed Us All
If you’re like me, cold weather gets you craving comfort foods: Warm, filling, rustic recipes that would be appropriate eaten in a log cabin before a roaring fire (with something on the television, because even my cozy urges happen in modern times).
For me, chicken pot pie is one of the ultimate comfort foods. It combines a few of my favorite things: Carbs (in the form of flaky crust), savory salty stew, and the timeless peas-and-carrots combo. Continue reading Recipe: Chicken Pot Pie
After last week’s cold long run, I resolved to buy myself some warmer running gloves. My hands just get ridiculously, unusably cold with my Reynaud’s once the temps drop. I went to Marathon Sports with a birthday gift card I’d received in search of gloves. Unfortunately, the only ones that seemed warm and windproof enough for my needs were also sold out in my size. Never one to be deterred from shopping, I browsed the rest of the store for other cold weather gear and came upon the Nike Element Shield Full Zip Jacket. Continue reading Gear Review: Nike Element Shield Full Zip Jacket
Just for a little New Year’s fun, I thought I’d link to some of my favorite happy YouTube videos.
Lest you think I’m just being goofy, videos have long been used in psychology to induce good moods. I remember working on studies in grad school where the IRB would require we do something positive at the end of the experience to make sure participants left in a good mood; videos of puppies and kittens seemed to do the trick. Watching happy videos isn’t only good for your mood; it can also make you more creative and productive.
So get clicking, and don’t forget to leave some of your favorite videos in the comments to spread the love! Continue reading Friday Funday: To the YouTubes!
